Heading into the third round of the Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, Jenny Bae leads Miranda Wang and Brianna Do by one stroke.
Bae hasn’t had the most flawless of a start to this event in Mexico, but she has leaned heavily on her short game and putting. Bae sits at -6 for the tournament so far and on Friday shot -3 with two bogeys and five birdies. Bae has only hit 17 fairways and 24 greens so far, but has just 55 putts.
Bae is just 23-years-old and is a rookie on the tour. She is likely most known to golf fans for taking Rose Zhang to a playoff in the 2023 Augusta National Women’s Amateur. She is trying to become the third rookie to win on the LPGA Tour this season, no rookies won in 2024.
Chasing Bae is fellow rookie Miranda Wang, who over came a tough first round to not only make the cut, but get into contention. Wang had seven birdies without a bogey Friday to shoot the low round of the day. She hit 11 fairways, 14 greens and had only 25 putts. She sits one back on the tournament at -5.
Also at -5 is Epson Tour player Brianna Do, who had a rough finish after a dream start. Coming into the second round with a share of the lead, Do made three birdies without a bogey on her front nine. She struggled down the stretch though, making bogey, double bogey on the last two to shoot -1 for the day.
The third round of the Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba kicks off on Golf Channel at 3 p.m. est.
