On a scorching day in the desert of Indian Wells, Sophia Schubert was red-hot leading to a -8 64.

Schubert didn’t make any bogeys in the opening round and really caught fire right after the turn. While she made four birdies on her first nine, she birdied her 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th holes of the day to open up a huge lead at -8 thru 13.

This puts Schubert in a fantastic position moving forward this week. While she has secured her card, gaining Category 9 status is a bit up in the air, as she sits at No. 10 in the Race for the Card standings heading into the week. Even without a win, a good finish should guarantee her full status.

One stroke back of Schubert is one of her playing partners over the first two days, Spain’s Carla Tejedo Mulet. Mulet also has a lot to play for this week, as she currently sits at No. 12 in the Race for the Card standings, and has not yet clinched. Mulet was pretty perfect, also going bogey-free and hitting 14 fairways and 15 greens with only 26 putts.

Tied with Mulet is Alice Hodge, who has a bit of a steeper mountain to climb this week, sitting at No. 59 in the standings. Her putter was fantastic, needing only 24 putts to get through her first round. Hodge has just one top-10 finish this year and has made only 7/17 cuts.

The second round of The Epson Tour Championship continues today.
