At the CME Group Tour Championship, the season-finale event on the LPGA Tour, major champion Allisen Corpuz has taken the early lead in the morning.
Corpuz, a native Hawaiian, was successful in her usual way. Pinpoint accuracy. Off the tee, Corpuz hit 13/14 fairways and 15 greens. She’s a strong putter as well, and was showing that off with only 28 putts in that opening round.
Corpuz got off to a shaky start Thursday, making par on the par 5 first hole and a bogey on the third. She made up for it right away though with four straight birdies to get to -3 for the front nine.
The back nine started strong with a birdie on 10, followed by five pars. She did make birdies on the par 3 16 and par 4 17 though to get into the clubhouse with a -6 66.
Tiburon Golf Club certainly is friendly to players who are elite putters, as evidenced by last year’s event becoming a showdown between Jeeno Thitikul and Angel Yin, two of the best players with the flat stick in the world.
Nobody else that went off in the morning got to even -5 for the round, so Corpuz should be in good standing heading into the second round.
Corpuz is looking for her second-career LPGA Tour victory, after winning the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach in 2023. She has been a strong Solheim Cup player for the United States though, going 5-2-1 in her career.
