Stop me if you’ve heard this before, Ally Ewing is in the top five in a major championship.
Ewing has lived in that mode over the past month, posting four consecutive top-five finishes. That includes two majors, the U.S. Women’s Open and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Coming into the day, it seemed that streak was going to come to an end.
Fast forward to now, where Ewing was far enough down on the leaderboard to tee off on the back nine, and she is back in contention.
Ewing, the 31-year-old American looking for her first career major, shot a bogey-free -7 round to get down to -14. Ewing at the moment still sits well back of the lead, but the impressive round shows her hot streak is continuing.
Ewing’s ball-striking was predictably elite, pairing long hitting with 11 fairways hit and 16 greens. It only took her 28 putts to get around. The score could’ve been a lot better as well. Ewing had four pars in a row to end her round, including on both of the front nine par 5s.
With a strong finish tomorrow, Ewing will continue to bolster her Solheim Cup resumé. She is essentially a lock at this point to play in her fourth-consecutive Solheim, a spot she seemed in possible danger of losing coming into the season after some disappointing performances.
The lead is currently held by Ayaka Furue and Stephanie Kyriacou at -13, who still have holes to play today, but Ewing could have a realistic run come tomorrow.
