Caroline Masson shot up the leaderboard in the late afternoon at the Portland Classic, shooting -8 to get one back of her German countrywoman Polly Mack.
Masson, like many on the leaderboard, took advantage of the easier back nine at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, with seven birdies on that back side. Masson birdied 10-14 in route to the round that got her in contention.
While Masson was a bit erratic off the tee, hitting only seven fairways, she made up for it on the approach. Masson hit 14 greens, and did a good job at converting once she had the flat stick in her hands. She had only 25 putts on the round.
Masson is looking for just her second LPGA Tour title, and her first returning from maternity leave early this year. Masson hasn’t had the strongest return, which is to be expected, but there have been flashes of strong play.
Masson tees off in the morning wave Friday. The course played a bit easier in the morning yesterday so Masson should have a chance to climb even higher.
