Ally Ewing and Grace Kim took advantage of the easier morning conditions on Friday to take the lead heading into the weekend at the Meijer LPGA Classic.
After playing solidly in the opening round, Ewing and Kim shot 63 and 65 respectively to go into the clubhouse at -11 through two rounds. Its a good number to be at, considering past history says players need to shoot at least -20 to win at Blythefield Country Club.
Ewing shot an incredible -9 63, which included seven birdies and an eagle with no bogeys. Ewing’s ball-striking was terrific, hitting 11 out of 13 fairways and 14 greens, but that wasn’t the story of the round. When Ewing putts well, she scores terrifically, which was the case on Friday. Ewing had only 24 putts Friday, down eight from 32 on Thursday.
Ewing’s success here shouldn’t be a surprise, she has the right style of game to play well at this course, which usually rewards great ball striking.
Grace Kim will also take her second weekend lead of the year, after a great -7 morning round. Kim has been the most consistent player of the week, shooting 68 or better both days. Kim has hit 31 greens over the first two days, fueling her strong performance.
The Meijer LPGA Classic picks up again tomorrow on Golf Channel at 3 P.M. est. on Saturday.
