If you were asleep when the HSBC Women’s World Championship was wrapping up, you could be forgiven. The final putt dropped at around 1:00 A.M. est. If you were sleeping though, you missed one of the best finishes in awhile on the LPGA Tour.
Hannah Green stepped onto hole 16 two strokes back of leader Celine Boutier, who was playing in the group ahead. Green’s day had been solid if a bit unspectacular to that point. A couple of front nine birdies were evened out a bit by a bogey on 10. But she did strike back with another red number on 12 to sit at -2 for the day.
Green then kicked it into gear. With excellent approaches on the par 5 16 and par 3 17, she stood on the 18th with a tie for the lead. After an average approach she was left with a 27-foot birdie putt to win. The rest is history. She buried it to win her fourth-career LPGA Tour event and second in as many years.
Green’s win continues the trend of all four winners so far on the LPGA Tour being major champions. Green’s first-career win was at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2019. The 27-year-old was the second Aussie to win this event after her mentor Karrie Webb in 2011.
