The best round of the morning wave in the second round of the inaugural Black Desert Championship belonged to major champion Hinako Shibuno, who fired a -7 65 to get to -9 for the tournament.
The story of Shibuno’s round starts on her first nine, the back nine. After an early bogey on 12, Shibuno eagled both holes 13 and 14. It was the first time in her LPGA career having eagles on back-to-back holes. She rounded out that nine with a birdie to shoot -4 32.
Her second nine got started a bit rough as well, as she bogeyed the first hole, but responded with four birdies down the stretch, three of which came on the final four holes. Shibuno played the four par fives in -5.
Shibuno responded from a mediocre ball striking day with a fantastic one, hitting 13 fairways and 15 greens. She had 27 putts for her round.
Shibuno has not won on the LPGA Tour since her 2019 AIG Women’s British Open win. She’s only had eight career top-10 finishes, but remarkably six of them have come in major championships. Consistency has been an issue for the Japanese star, but a win this week could be a good step moving forward in 2025.
