Hyo Joo Kim, playing with plenty of momentum after her win in Arizona, shot the best round of the afternoon Thursday at the Chevron Championship with a -5 67.
Kim got off the course just in time for the weather delay, which pushed the finish of the first round to Friday morning. She succeeded the way she always does, with accuracy and some of the best putting skill in the world.
Despite the course not necessarily fitting her game, she still made seven birdies and only two bogeys playing in the tougher conditions of the day. She bogeyed her final hole in a sloppy way, with a poorly placed tee shot.
It was her only missed fairway of the day, she hit her first 13. She only hit 11/18 greens, but made up for it with a startling 24 putts.
She sits two strokes behind Haeran Ryu and Yan Liu. The only person who seemingly has a legitimate chance to best Kim’s score in the first round afternoon is Lucy Li, who will have to play early Friday morning, but sits at -4 thru 14.
