The No. 37 Kentucky women’s golf team has taken a five-stroke lead heading into round two at the Nexus Collegiate hosted by Texas Tech.
The Nexus Collegiate is hosted at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas, and boasts a field including Michigan, Illinois, Iowa State and of course the host Texas Tech. But it was the Wildcats who stole the show on day one.
Kentucky was the only team to shoot under par, with a -3 285 as a team. This was mostly thanks to senior Laney Frye, who is on the top of the individual leaderboard after shooting -4 68. Graduate student Marissa Wenzler also provided help, shooting 71 and is currently in the top five as an individual.
Behind Kentucky are the hosts Texas Tech, who shot +2 as a team, followed by North Texas at +3, Iowa State at +4 and Illinois at +5. Texas Tech was led by Sophomore Lauren Zaretzky, who is second on the individual leaderboard after shooting -3.
The Nexus Collegiate will resume tomorrow for the second round of three. Stay tuned to Fore-All for the recaps throughout the rest of the week.
