After the first round of the Epson Tour’s Great Lakes Championships at the Highlands presented by Johnnie Walker, 22-year-old rookie Laney Frye leads by one at -6.
Frye got off to a tough start on the opening hole with a bogey, but recovered immediately with birdies on 2 and 3 to get into red figures, and never looked back. She added birdies on 5, 6 and 8 to go out in -4 32. Frye added two more birdies on 13 and 18 to finish out with a 66.
Frye was solid in the fairways and on the greens, hitting 15/18 GIR and only needing 28 putts. She leads by one stroke over Clariss Guce.
Frye is a rookie who played her college golf at Kentucky. She is off to a solid start in her professional career, currently sitting at No. 31 in the Race for the Card standings, having made every cut and grabbing a top-five finish in Las Vegas.
Also in contention is Gina Kim, who leads the Race for the Card standings currently, she is two back. Kim already has two wins on the season and a third would all but guarantee her spot on the LPGA Tour in 2026.
This is a three-round event, with round two kicking off this morning in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
