Over the last month, it became clear that Lauren Coughlin would certainly be representing the United States on the 2024 Solheim Cup team, but Sunday it became official.
Coughlin’s victory at the Scottish Open made her the fourth player to officially lock up one of the automatic qualifying spots for the 2024 United States Solheim Cup team. The win was the second in the past three weeks for a player who spent her first seven years as a professional without an LPGA Tour win.
Even before her wins, Coughlin was looking like a strong candidate to make the team. Prior to her two victories, Coughlin already had top-five finishes in two of the majors, the Chevron Championship and the Evian Championship. She has finished outside of the top 10 in only one individual tournament since May. Her worst finish since the beginning of July was ninth place in Portland.
Coughlin will bring some hometown hero energy to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club near Washington D.C. as well. Though she was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Coughlin grew up in Virginia. She also attended the University of Virginia, where she played on the golf team. Coughlin has. won three Virginia State Amateur titles and still currently resides in the state.
With clinching the team, Coughlin joins Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu and Ally Ewing. The final tournament for qualifying is this week’s AIG Women’s Open at St. Andrews. Currently in qualifying position are, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang, Andrea Lee, Rose Zhang and Alison Lee. Seven players will qualify on Solheim Cup points, two will qualify on Rolex Ranking position and three will be selected by captain Stacy Lewis.
