Heading into the final round of The Grant Thornton Invitational, there are still seven teams with a solid, realistic shot to take home the title, with the team of Lauren Coughlin and Andrew Novak in the lead.
It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that a team with Lauren Coughlin was dominant in the foursomes format, as the team shot the second best round of the day with a -4 68.
After a front nine with a birdie and eight pars, the scorecard got a bit more interesting on the back. After a couple birdies on 12 and 13, the duo had a double bogey on the par 5 14. After a birdie on 15 and par on 16, they were once again in trouble on a par 5 when Novak’s approach shot ended up in the greenside bunker. Coughlin stepped up to the challenge though with the highlight of the week, a beautiful hole out for eagle to get the team in the lead at -19.
One stroke back is the team of Charley Hull and Michael Brennan, who had a fairly average -1 round with three bogeys and four birdies. Lexi Thompson and Wyndham Clark sit two strokes back after an even par round where they had a par or better on every hole from five until the end.
The big movers of the day were the Canadian team of Brooke Henderson and Corey Conners, who got back into contention after a disappointing first round, shooting the low score of the day at -5. That score included seven birdies with six of them coming between holes seven and 17. They are three back and tied for fourth along with Rose Zhang and Michael Kim, Jennifer Kupcho and Chris Gotterup and Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy.
The final round can yield some very low scores, with the format being a modified best ball. Both players will tee off and then switch balls on their second shot. From there they will finish the hole and take the lowest score of the two.
The final round kicks off on Golf Channel at 1:00 ET before switching over to NBC at 2:00.
