Lexi Thompson, now playing on a more limited schedule, has worked her way into contention at the 2025 Chevron Championship.
Thompson struggled out of the gate Thursday, making bogeys on three of her first five holes and looking erratic off the tee. She did correct the issues quick, recovering to hit 11/14 fairways. The game showed flashes, especially with her hitting 14 greens, but as happens with Thompson at times, the putter let her down. For that first round, she shot +1 73.
It was a different story though on Friday, as Thompson’s game was clicking right away.
Thompson made three birdies without a dropped shot on the front nine, then had three more on the back with only one bogey. Overall she shot a -5 67 to get to -4 for the tournament heading into round three, three shots back of leader Yan Liu.
The difference was in the short game. Thompson had near identical stats on Friday as she did Thursday, but her placement, proximity and putting was stronger. She had just 28 putts for the round, for Thompson that will work almost every time.
The 11-time winner on tour has missed six of the last nine major cuts she’s played in, but did have a nice result last year at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, where she entered the final day in second place. This looks to be a good chance for her to go get her second major title.
