While the typical LPGA superstars, Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang, Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko and more will undoubtedly see their typical huge crowds this week at the U.S. Women’s Open, one player will undoubtedly be the local favorite. In Gee Chun.
In 2015, In Gee Chun won her first career major at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Since that win, she has added two more majors to her resumé, in 2016 at Evian and the 2022 KPMG Women’s PGA at Congressional. Though she only has one other LPGA Tour win, she shows up at majors. Her connection to Lancaster Country Club goes deeper than just being a winning venue though.
In 2018, In Gee Chun and Lancaster Country Club established the In Gee Chun – LCC Educational Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to make a lasting impact in the Lancaster community by providing scholarships for students. The scholarships go to caddies, employees of the club and their dependents.
Before the start of the foundation, Chun had given 10,000 dollars to the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust, which gives to clubs around Southern Pennsylvania. The In Gee Chun – LCC Educational Foundation was established to ensure the money was directly servicing Lancaster.
She doesn’t just give back to this cause though. She has also given three times as of 2018 to LCC member Jody Kegel’s charity event raising money for local cancer patients. She gives signed flags and 10,000 dollars for the event.
Chun is now ranked No. 75 in the Rolex Rankings. Her last top-10 finish was in August 2023. Maybe a return to a community that will surely be cheering her on all weekend is an opportunity to get back on track, or in the winner’s circle.
