Two-time major champion, and six-time winner on the LPGA Tour, So Yeon Ryu announced her plans to retire following this years Chevron Championship.
In a note shared to her Instagram page, Ryu wrote:
“After deciding to retire, I spent much time looking back on my career. So many memories came flooding back, and I felt so many emotions. But the more I thought about it, the more I was thankful for so many things. I am so grateful that I could do what I loved to do, day in and day out, and even make a career out of it. I am not going to lie; I had some hard patches, but despite some of the challenges, I truly enjoyed it all. And more than anything, I feel incredibly grateful for the love and support I’ve received from all of you throughout my career.”
Ryu will play in the Chevron Championship in April, one of the two majors she won in her career, though she won it in its previous incarnation, the ANA Championship at Mission Hills in the Palm Springs area.
Ryu won the event in 2017, her second major title after the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open. Ryu’s last win on tour was in the 2018 Meijer LPGA Classic, a two-stroke victory over Caroline Masson.
The 33-year-old from South Korea was one of the biggest names in the first wave of Korean LPGA players that came in the wake of this week’s tournament host Seri Pak. She won the 2012 LPGA Rookie of the Year and the 2017 LPGA Tour Player of the Year.
