Morgane Metraux, the 27-year-old from Switzerland, had one of the more unique scorecards you’ll ever see on Thursday at the Olympics, giving her the lead at the moment in Paris.
Metraux exploded early, with dour birdies plus an eagle on her first six holes to get to -6 for the day. She came into the second round at -2 after birdies on 17 and 18 to finish on Wednesday. She polished off her first nine with a second eagle. She had only one eagle all season before today. Her final front nine score? 28.
The back nine was a different story for Metraux. After three pars to start, she found the thick rough on the par 4 13, forcing a layup and eventual bogey. After a comeback birdie on the par 5 14, she hit in the water on 15, resulting in another bogey. On 18, she once again found the water on her second shot, then almost hit in again. She finished off with a bogey six.
Metraux shot 38 on that back nine, and it could have been worse. Her group was on the clock for much of the last nine holes, which could have resulted in a slow play penalty. She currently sits at -8, but superstars like Lydia Ko and Nelly Korda are still on the course and chasing.
