Nelly Korda had the low score of the difficult afternoon wave, shooting a -4 68 in the opening round of the Chevron Championship.

The world No. 1 is seeking her fifth LPGA title in a row at the season’s first major championship, and she couldn’t be off to a better start. While few players in the afternoon could break par, Korda had a relatively easygoing round.

Korda got off to a bad start, when her second shot on her first hole clipped a tree and landed well short of the green. She made bogey there, but recovered quickly on 14 and 17 with birdies. Her tee shot on the par 3 17 almost went in for her second career ace on Tour.

Korda birdied her last two holes of the day, eight and nine, to secure the low score. Even if she would have finished at -2 it would have left her in good position, but with those extra birdies she is firmly in contention to win.

She currently sits in a tie for second place with Marina Alex and Minami Katsu behind Lauren Coughlin. Expect an opportunity to score lower tomorrow in the morning wave.
