World No. 1 Nelly Korda is one of the four athletes nominated for best women’s athlete at the 2024 ESPY Awards.
The ESPY Awards, created in 1993, award the best in sports throughout a given year by ESPN and ABC. The voting for the awards are done both by fans, as well as media members.
Korda is the first golfer nominated for best women’s athlete since 2008, when Lorena Ochoa was a nominee. Korda’s incredible six wins in 2024, including a major, vaulted her into rarified air for a golfer. Korda is nominated alongside basketball players A’ja Wilson and Caitlin Clark, and tennis star Coco Gauff.
While it is admittedly a bit crazy no golfer has been nominated for this award in over 15 years, it does show the dominance Korda has displayed this year, and how much it has translated into mainstream sports.
Also nominated in the “Best Golfer” category is world No. 2 Lilia Vu, who last year won two majors and four events overall, and also won another event just a couple of weeks ago at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Vu is nominated alongside Korda, along with Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler.
The ESPY Awards air on July 11, hosted by tennis legend Serena Williams.
