World No. 1 Nelly Korda won her fifth tournament in a row and second major at the Chevron Championship near Houston by two strokes over Maja Stark.
Korda got off to a strong start while her playing partners Brooke Henderson and Haeran Ryu struggled early. While she made the turn with a healthy lead, it was a chip-in for birdie on the par 4 10th hole that gave her a commanding four-stroke lead.
The round wasn’t without some stumbles, as she bogeyed the 11th hole. On the par 4 15th, with her lead already shrinking, she drove her ball into the water and made her second bogey of the round. In her previous major victory, the 2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, she also hit her tee shot into the water on 15.
Despite the struggles, Korda recovered well. She almost hit her tee shot on the par 3 17 in, and settled for a tap in par. While her lead was cut to one stroke by Stark on the 18th, Nelly didn’t show her nerves, hitting one of the best second shots of the day. After two putts, she closed with a history-making birdie.
Korda joins two titans of the game, LPGA Hall of Famers Annika Sörenstam and Nancy Lopez as the only players to win five starts in a row. With one more she would break the LPGA Tour record.
Overall this was Korda’s 13th win and second major championship. The world No. 1 will be back in action next week in Los Angeles at the JM Eagle Championship.
