Woo Pig Sooie! Mexico for the second Olympics in a row is sending out a duo of Arkansas Razorbacks legends to represent the country in France. In Tokyo one of these players, Gaby López, was the first women’s golfer to carry their country’s flag into the opening ceremonies, a sign of the respect these players have. Here, meet the two Razorbacks who will be representing Mexico at the Olympics:
GABY LÓPEZ
Gaby López is set to compete in her third consecutive Olympic games in Paris, a sign of her longevity on the women’s golf stage. Playing full-time on the LPGA Tour since 2016, López has three wins and two top-10 finishes in majors. The 30-year-old hasn’t won in the last two seasons, with six top 30 finishes to only three missed cuts in 2024. In 2023, López had four top-10 finishes, putting together one of the best seasons for a player who didn’t have a win. While López isn’t necessarily elite in any category, she does attack the course with a well rounded game. Her strength would likely be considered putting, gaining strokes in that category in each of the last three seasons. In her two previous Olympic performances, López finished around the mid point in the field, finishing 31st and 23rd.
MARÍA FASSI
Unfortunately for Fassi, she is a victim of her own success. Hitting the LPGA Tour as a day one star after one of the most successful college careers ever, her pro career has left a bit to be desired. The free-swinging, long-hitting 26-year-old is still in search of her first LPGA Tour victory and her results in majors have been erratic to say the least. In the majors she has no top-10 finishes and has missed more cuts than she has made in the big ones. What Fassi lacks in results though, she makes up for in pure talent. Any given week Fassi can compete with the best in the world. Over the course of her career, Fassi is by every metric one of the best drivers of the golf ball in the world. In her short career she has been top three on tour in driving distance three times, and has finished top 10 every year. While consistency has never been her strength, she did finish top 10 in three events in 2023. She currently ranks at No. 203 in the Rolex Rankings.
