Back in 2019, Ally Ewing, then McDonald, was an alternate for the United States Solheim Cup team. She had no wins yet on her career. Yet, when now captain Stacy Lewis withdrew because of injury, she stepped in. A lot has changed since then.
Ewing is now a three-time winner on the LPGA Tour about to take part in her fourth Solheim Cup. This event has been a bit of a problem spot for Ewing, hence the ranking here, but there are few playing better golf in the world than her in 2024.
As mentioned, Ewing and the Solheim Cup haven’t always been friends. She has a 3-8-1 record across three playings and has never had a winning or .500 record in any one Solheim Cup. She was close last year, but suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Caroline Hedwall in Sunday singles.
Ewing just feels different in 2024 though. While she hasn’t had a win, it has been her best season on Tour. A season so strong she almost made the United States Olympic Team. Ewing ranks No. 8 in the CME Standings and has six top-10 finishes. Three of those top 10s were in majors.
Traditionally Ewing is strongest in fourball play. This isn’t a shock considering how good of a ball-striker she is. She should pair up for both fourball sessions with Jennifer Kupcho, with whom she finished runner-up with at the Dow Championship. Lewis alluded to that pairing when selecting Kupcho.
Ewing could very well be one of the elite players on the United States team. She has all the tools and a lot of momentum. It’ll just be about proving she can do it in this setting.
