I think it is fair to say that the heart and soul of the United States team in the 2023 Solheim Cup was Megan Khang. After having a breakthrough season, where she won her first career tournament, she was spectacular in the red, white and blue. A result that I think will continue in 2024.
It wasn’t hard to pick out who the MVP of the last Solheim Cup was for the United States. Khang went 3-0-1 in her four matches, the only player for the USA who didn’t have a loss. Khang went 2-0 playing foursomes matches with Lexi Thompson, getting some of the most energy we’ve seen out of Thompson. She also helped Rose Zhang to her lone halve of the event. On Sunday, she went out early and defeated one of Europe’s best players, Linn Grant.
Khang brings an energy and new life to everyone she plays with. Nobody would ever question how much she cares about the event. Across her three playings, she has steadily gotten better. In 2019, she went 0-2-1. She improved to 1-1-1 in 2021 before breaking out last year. She has also never lost a singles match in the Solheim Cup despite some tough matchups.
Khang’s season hasn’t been nearly what it was in 2023, but the high results have been good. Khang has three top-three finishes, including recently at the Scottish Open. Though the consistency has been tough to come by, she has done a good job at getting herself in the mix.
Khang has struggled mightily with her putting in 2024, the reason for most of her struggles overall, but the ball striking has been elite. Khang is second in strokes gained tee-to-green and fourth in strokes gained approach.
Expect Khang to perform well on home turf with the fans behind her. She should slot nicely in the Danielle Kang role as the fiery, passionate leader on this team.
