It is not lost on the United States team, and assistant captain Paula Creamer, the significance in both the location and the timing of the 2024 Solheim Cup.
“We were talking actually, Angela (Stanford) and I, like how crazy is it that we are here this week representing the United States. September 11th is tomorrow. We are here as a team,” said Creamer. “That’s what our country is all about, is wearing the red, white, and blue.”
The Solheim Cup, being played just over 30 miles away from Washington D.C., is taking the time to honor those lost in the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. There is a large American flag being held up by a fire truck on site today. At the times of the attacks, there are moments of silence being held by everyone on site.
Monday, the United States team had the opportunity to visit the Pentagon as well as meet former President Barack Obama.
“Yesterday was, I think, one of the coolest things we were able to do, go to the Pentagon, to actually be looking at the Memorial there,” said Creamer.
The players are motivated to defend their home turf and represent their country with pride in their nation’s capital.
“Whenever you get to wear the red, white, and blue and stars and stripes, there’s a different meaning to it,” said Nelly Korda. “You’re playing not just for yourself, but for your captains, for your teammates and your country, and there’s just nothing like it.”
