The ninth edition of Capitol One’s The Match raised money for the First Tee and also showed off the skills and charisma of two LPGA superstars.
The Match in total raised 2.1 million for charity in its Skins format. Rory McIlroy was the champion, with 1.9 million won, with Lexi Thompson in second with 200,000. The Match was held at The Park in West Palm Beach, Fla. an excellent venue under the lights.
Thompson and Zhang more than held their own, they thrived, both frankly outperforming Max Homa. Though neither could really contend with the greatness that is four-time major champion McIlroy, they maybe had the best moments of the event.
First and foremost, Thompson winning the first two skins of the event with an incredible eagle on the second hole. Though it was no surprise to see Thompson reach the green with a fairway wood off the tee, her putt to win was fantastic.
On the final hole of regulation, it was Zhang’s turn to impress. After a poor second shot, Rose found herself in the sand left of the green, with trees all around her. As the announcers pointed out, Zhang isn’t necessarily used to being out of position considering her usual straight-hitting approach. Yet, Zhang pulled off probably the shot of the tournament to get up and down.
While McIlroy came away the winner, it was Thompson and Zhang that were regularly challenging him, tying holes to force the skins to advance. Both impressed on the mic as well, particularly Thompson who had some great jabs at her fellow players and the announcers.
The first edition of The Match was a smashing success television wise, the question now is what LPGA players are next?
